Becoming a self-taught artist was a progression from my love of creative photography back in the days of 35mm film. I had no formal education in art but as I travelled more and visited many galleries I developed a passion for art. The desire grew to try my hand at oils so I started at the age of 45 in 2010.  I experimented for a couple of years finding myself drawn towards creating landscapes and architecture. This stood me in good stead when I decided to enter ‘Master of Art International’ in 2014 and was honoured to receive my first award.
I draw much of my inspiration from my travels and the extraordinary. I love the freedom that oil and the palette give me to portray my subject with a free flowing personal expressive interpretation rather than creating more accurate depiction of the subject. I simply leave that to the digital camera.  I paint from digital photographs generally with the exception of the occasional abstracts which essentially evolve through my imagination and selective memory. 
As a design draughtsman by profession I have to adhere to stringent rules of geometry and scale of course, so I find my painting offers me such a wonderful means of escape and sense of well-being which I hope shows in my style to the viewer.

"The Manor House" - April 2024 - Oil on canvas 20 x 24" - When I originally painted The Manor House I had a series of photos to work from in the comfort of my studio. Although more than happy with the original I prefer this veiwpoint which reveals the interesting architecture of the house in the lawned area and brings it closer using a different format canvas. For at least a month I had to work on this using my left hand instead, having fractured my right wrist. I don’t personally think this shows in the end result and I changed back to the right when the cast was removed.
"The Manor House" - September 2023 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 30" - Commission, Sold - A beautiful country residence in the South of England. I was honoured when I was given the challenge of creating a commission of this unique historic house in it’s wonderful grounds. It took a great deal of time to complete and I had to turn down my gears of artistic license to produce something with a degree of architectural accuracy whilst maintaining my signature style.
"Low Tide" - 20 x 24 " Oil on canvas - Set in Wells Next The Sea in North Norfolk, England, veiwed from the Quayside as the moored up boats rest on the sand of an inlet from the surrounding salt marshes. In the background is the raised Pine Woodland area which slopes down to the main beach.
"Angel of the Lakes" - - July 2022 Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - I have always been amazed to see the Grey Heron in flight. So distinctive in the way they wind back their long neck and trail their legs out straight at the aft end beyond the tail feathers. I wanted to show this rather than poised at the waterside stalking prey. By creating a greater depth of field for a close-up image I wanted to also bring the background scenery into focus so that the viewer has a sense of being alongside the bird in flight rather than viewed at a distance through a telephoto lens or binoculars.
"Morning Glow" - April 2022, - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Capturing a sunrise moment as lady with her Collie enjoy a walk on Caister Beach, Norfolk overlooked by the wonderful offshore wind turbines of Scroby Sands punctuating the horizon with their silhouettes.
"Dawn Amanda" - January 2022 - Oil on canvas, portrait 18 x 14” - The first painting of 2022. I first painted this young lady nine years ago when I had little experience in portaiture and was not satisfied with the end result yet it was still fun to create. She kindly agreed for me to portray her again in my own personal style of today and both my subject and I were very pleased with it this time.
"Happisburgh Lighthouse" - August 2021, Oil on canvas board, 16 x 20” - In the village of Happisburgh, on the Norfolk coast. A landward view of the lighthouse contrasted by a stormy sky in the background. I decided not to put crops in the surrounding fields but instead show them ploughed adding another feature to compliment the overall perspective of the composition.
"Waterside Marina" - March 2021, Oil on canvas, 20 x 24” - A view across Brightlingsea Creek, Essex from Point Clear on the opposite side of the water. Whilst maintaining the general feel of the buildings I simplified much of the detail to bring the elements of the composition together in a pleasing way. I wanted to include a reasonable amount of foreground to add contrast and depth juxtaposed with the the Marina buildings and moorings on the opposite shore. The original sketch was started in November 2020. I would say this has been a great journey through the difficult times we all have faced having kept me busy and amused.
"Blooms by the Window" - May 2021 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 14” I decided to focus this time on a simple still life using vibrant colours. Whilst using a friend’s photographs as a guide for the general composition, I allowed my brush and imagination to decide on the final arrangement. The central white and crimson tulip was added to create a focal point.
"The Patient Kingfisher" - 14 x 18" Oil on canvas. - I have enjoyed being able to see this elusive bird on several occasions. Inspired by many recent walks around the Norfolk Broads I wanted to portray a Kingfisher up close with it’s rich colorful plumage and characteristics whilst perched on a branch over the water patiently waiting for it’s next catch.
"Nearing The Staithe" - August 2020 - Oil on canvas board, 16 x 20" - A sunset moment captured at the village of Potter Heigham on the Norfolk Broads.
"Playa Jardín" - May 2020 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Originally created back in November 2014 then neglected for several years, I decided I would love to re-work this earlier painting to finally bring it to life. For me it worked as a fond reminder of previous summer holidays in these strange times of the sudden unforseen lockdown. This is the main beach area in Puerta de la Cruz, North Tenerife with it’s volcanic sand and rocks. Although it receives a reasonable amount of sunshine it is often cloaked with dramatic clouds by Mount Tiede which actually formed the whole island.
"The Enlightened" - April 2020 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - This painting was inspired by a trip to Cambodia a few years back when we visited Kbal Chhay Waterfalls in the south of the country. After relaxing for a while on a lovely bamboo platform several Buddhist monks arrived to bathe in the waters. I loved the vibrant colour of their saffron and crimson robes juxtaposed with the rocks and background foliage. Being more prominent foreground characters than those usually included in my compositions, I made their faces distinct enough whilst leaving some anonymity.
"Poppies" - February 2020 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 14” - Showing three poppy heads in various stages of natural development. I was particularly drawn to the subject by the happy little dancing shadow it cast across the fence in the late afternoon sun.
"Port Townsend Sunrise" - December 2019 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Whilst enjoying a very early morning walk with my cousin and the dog I was able to capture with my camera the moment the sun started to rise over the lighthouse at Port Townsend, Washington State. The sun arose directly over the lighthouse giving the impression of a lighthouse beam across the calm water of the bay whilst adding a warming golden glow to the water
"Moving Home" - November 2019 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 16” - This is pair of Herring Gulls who chose a new nest site near to my house in Gorleston on Sea, Norfolk. From my favorable vantage point on the first floor I was able to observe and photograph them building, sharing brooding, feeding and successfully raising young and of course the opportunity to eventually paint them. They are on the decline in the U.K. and are outnumbered by Lesser Black Backs here during the summer being a very similar species both adding to the ambiance of a typical English seaside town with their distinctive cry.
"The Pin Mill 1" - August 2019 - Oil on canvas, 59 x 42cm - Capturing the reflections of masts as the tide recedes at Shotley Pin Mill, Suffolk on the River Orwell. Although painted in oil my intention was for it to have much more the appearance of a lightly painted water colour.
"Portrait of Sylvia Schmitt" - July 2019 - Charcoal drawing on canvas, 16 x 12” - Sylvia Schmitt is a succesful professional artist from Germany who specialises in photo-realistic portraiture with a stunning portfolio of famous faces. I was honoured when she gave me permission to portrait her from a set of photographs. This was originally to be an oil painting but I liked the initial charcoal drawing so much I decided to leave it as a drawing and sign it as a finished work. Most importantly she said she likes it very much.
"Smallcraft and Shipping" - May 2019 - Oil on canvas, 42 x 59cm - A veiw of Harwich Jetty on an unusually warm late February morning with small fishing boat and foot ferry juxtaposed against the background of massive container ships in the Port of Felixtowe on the other side.
"Sunrise with Seagulls" - November 2018 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - I decided to paint the view from my studio in Gorleston on Sea, Norfolk. I noticed that when viewed at the right level, the sodium light would halo the tower in the background making a rather pleasing composition together with enriching the natural colours in the morning light.
"La Casa Amarilla" - June 2018 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 16” - Having completed “The Roof Terrace” in 2017 I decided to create another scene of Trinidad de Cuba. This time bringing it down to Street level and including more prominent foreground characters.
"Boats on Filby Broad" - March 2018 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Exhibited at The Yare Gallery Summer Exhibition, Gt. Yarmouth 2021 - Set on a windy summer day at Filby Broad, Norfolk I wanted to capture the essence of movement in the water, clouds and trees.
"Cannongate Bridge" - January 2018 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Exhibited at The Yare Gallery Summer Exhibition, Gt. Yarmouth 2021 - Inspired by an early morning walk in the Scottish Borders. A 16th century 3 arch bridge in Jedburgh over Jed Water. The third arch is obscured by cascading willows.
"Willie Lott’s Cottage" - December 2017 - Charcoal on paper, 7 x 11” - A rough sketch of the cottage which featured in John Constable’s Hay Wain as it appears today.
"The Roof Terrace" - October 2017 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 24” - I have travelled around Cuba on several occasions and for most of the time stay in guest houses run by local people for a more immersive experience away from the tourist resorts. This was the view I enjoyed in the early evening in such a place for several nights in Trinidad de Cuba on my last trip.
"The Pines" - July 2017 - Oil on canvas, 22 x 16” - This picture was simply inspired by one of many walks through the forest we enjoyed whilst visiting family in Washington State. I decided to lighten the trunks of the huge pines to make them more of a prominent feature in the composition.
"Tribute to Vincent" - June 2017 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 24” - I felt it was important for me to create my own version of at least one painting by one of the masters so I chose “Wheatfield with Cypresses” by Vincent Van Gogh. I enjoyed immensely using a different technique which used up a great amount of paint in the process.
"Calm" - February 2017 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 22” - Brightlingsea, Essex. I’ve seen so many pictures of beach huts and taken many photos but I wanted to simply capture the calmness of the water at low tide with the beach huts adding a splash of background colour to compliment the shoreline and the perspective of the timbers across the beach.
"The Mirror Lake" - January 2017 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - In North Cascades National Park, Washington State. Mount Shuksan viewed from a small lake which under the favourable weather conditions shows a beautiful, sharp reflection of the mountain.
"The Martello Tower" - June 2016 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Award for Best Landscape at Master of Art International 2016, The Forum, Norwich. - I always wanted to include a Martello Tower in one of my paintings. Painted from photographs I took after having seen such a lovely acrylic painting by friend and artist, Carl Johnson. This is one of the many Martello towers dotted along the South east coast of England. All constructed in the early 19th century for defence during the Napoleonic era. I decided to use richer colour for this for my own composition and added real sand to the beach to give it texture.
"Breydon Bridge" - April 2016 - Acrylic and Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Built in 1985 The Breydon Bridge in Gt. Yarmouth replaces the former railway Breydon Viaduct which was demolished in 1963. Unlike the majority of my work I completed this painting in very few sittings having used acrylic as the base composition and then oil to finish off.
"El Malecón" - February 2016 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Award for Best Architecture at Master of Art International 2016, The Forum, Norwich. - El Malecón (The Promenade) in Old Havana starts to come to life as the evening approaches when people gather to stroll, watch the sunset and socialise. Most of the old buildings are very weathered yet stunning, so I used loose brushwork to capture the ambience of this unique Caribbean City.
"Empty Spaces on the Balcony" - July 2015 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Commision, sold 2015 - I was asked if I would create a view from a holiday apartment in Majorca from a set of photographs. I was more than happy with the end result as was my client so have a smaller 8 x 10” print myself for the record and to enjoy.
"St. Osyth in Spring" - June 2015 - Oil on canvas, 24 x 18” - Viewed from St. Osyth, Essex. I wanted to use the perspective of the remaining jetty timbers to lead the viewers eye towards Bateman’s Tower in Brightlingsea on the other side.
"Cley Marshes" - July 2014 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Exhibited at Master of Art International 2015, Chelsea Gallery, London. - Depicting a quintessential Norfolk Scene in the village of Cley near Blakeney, North Norfolk. The reeds are still cut occasionally for use in the traditional craft of thatching.
"Trinidad de Cuba" - July 2014 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 16” - Award for Best Architecture at Master of Art International 2014, Gt. Yarmouth Racecourse. - Trinidad de Cuba is the most preserved colonial City in the Caribbean and designated a UNESCO site with it’s unique architecture, maze of narrow cobblestone streets, vibrant colours and rich culture. So inspired by this small city I have created further works since and revisited.
"The Tide Mill" - April 2013 - Oil on canvas board, 20 x 16” - This landmark building in Woodbridge, Suffolk has been included in many paintings over the years. Although in later years I have created more complex landscapes I remain particulary fond of this earlier painting due to it’s innocent simplicity.
"Halong Bay" - December 2013 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Award for Best Landscape at Master of Art International 2015, Chelsea Gallery, London. - Inspired by a trip to North Vietnam, Halong Bay is a landscape of towering limestone islets rising from calm emerald waters punctuated by small fishing communities in their secluded floating villages.
"Bradwell Church" - February 2013 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Exhibited at Master of Art International 2014, Gt Yarmouth Racecourse. - I love this Church in Bradwell, Norfolk with its flint round tower and grounds blessed with an abundance of birdlife in tranquil surroundings. Close to our family home and hearts since the mid 1980’s .
"San Telmo Bay" - November 2012 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - The majority of the tourists from Britain head for the south of Tenerife for guaranteed sunshine and golden beaches but I prefer the North which has a much more Canarian feel to it with it’s natural volcanic beaches which inspired me to paint this vibrant scene in Puerta de la Cruz.
"Portrait of Terry Payne" - November 2012 - Acrylic on canvas, 20 x 16” - I seldom create portraits but felt it was important to include one of my dear father and was not displeased with the likeness. It is also rare for me to choose acrylic as a medium for the finished work.
"Norfolk Church in Winter" - October 2012 - Oil on canvas board, 12 x 16” - Commision, sold 2012 - I found myself painting snow for the first time. Painted from photographs from a client who requested that I left it in it’s sketchy form after first the viewing. I believe the church is somewhere near Diss in Norfolk. I particularly enjoyed creating the snow covered Yew trees in the churchyard.
"Cambodian Fishing Village" - September 2012 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - It is quite a common sight in Cambodia for people to live in floating homes like the ones portrayed here. This was inspired by photographs by myself and other travellers
"Sydney Harbour Bridge" - April 2010 - Oil on canvas board, 30 x 24cm - This was the very first landscape painting I created having only started painting in February 2010 at the age of 45. Anything before this work was purely experimental as was everything I did for the following year. The title speaks for itself of course. I still remember that tranquil pensive moment in 1992 waiting for the perfect shot with my 35mm film camera when the small sailing boat passed by the backdrop of the silouetted bridge just as the sun was setting. I reflected on the places visited, people I’d met and experiences I’d had before leaving Australia after three months for the United States.

"The Martello Tower" - June 2016 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Award for Best Landscape at Master of Art International 2016, The Forum, Norwich. - I always wanted to include a Martello Tower in one of my paintings. Painted from photographs I took after having seen such a lovely acrylic painting by friend and artist, Carl Johnson. This is one of the many Martello towers dotted along the South east coast of England. All constructed in the early 19th century for defence during the Napoleonic era. I decided to use richer colour for this for my own composition and added real sand to the beach to give it texture.
"Breydon Bridge" - April 2016 - Acrylic and Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Built in 1985 The Breydon Bridge in Gt. Yarmouth replaces the former railway Breydon Viaduct which was demolished in 1963. Unlike the majority of my work I completed this painting in very few sittings having used acrylic as the base composition and then oil to finish off.
"El Malecón" - February 2016 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Award for Best Architecture at Master of Art International 2016, The Forum, Norwich. - El Malecón (The Promenade) in Old Havana starts to come to life as the evening approaches when people gather to stroll, watch the sunset and socialise. Most of the old buildings are very weathered yet stunning, so I used loose brushwork to capture the ambience of this unique Caribbean City.
"Empty Spaces on the Balcony" - July 2015 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Commision, sold 2015 - I was asked if I would create a view from a holiday apartment in Majorca from a set of photographs. I was more than happy with the end result as was my client so have a smaller 8 x 10” print myself for the record and to enjoy.
"St. Osyth in Spring" - June 2015 - Oil on canvas, 24 x 18” - Viewed from St. Osyth, Essex. I wanted to use the perspective of the remaining jetty timbers to lead the viewers eye towards Bateman’s Tower in Brightlingsea on the other side.
"Cley Marshes" - July 2014 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Exhibited at Master of Art International 2015, Chelsea Gallery, London. - Depicting a quintessential Norfolk Scene in the village of Cley near Blakeney, North Norfolk. The reeds are still cut occasionally for use in the traditional craft of thatching.
"Trinidad de Cuba" - July 2014 - Oil on canvas, 20 x 16” - Award for Best Architecture at Master of Art International 2014, Gt. Yarmouth Racecourse. - Trinidad de Cuba is the most preserved colonial City in the Caribbean and designated a UNESCO site with it’s unique architecture, maze of narrow cobblestone streets, vibrant colours and rich culture. So inspired by this small city I have created further works since and revisited.
"The Tide Mill" - April 2013 - Oil on canvas board, 20 x 16” - This landmark building in Woodbridge, Suffolk has been included in many paintings over the years. Although in later years I have created more complex landscapes I remain particulary fond of this earlier painting due to it’s innocent simplicity.
"Halong Bay" - December 2013 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Award for Best Landscape at Master of Art International 2015, Chelsea Gallery, London. - Inspired by a trip to North Vietnam, Halong Bay is a landscape of towering limestone islets rising from calm emerald waters punctuated by small fishing communities in their secluded floating villages.
"Bradwell Church" - February 2013 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Exhibited at Master of Art International 2014, Gt Yarmouth Racecourse. - I love this Church in Bradwell, Norfolk with its flint round tower and grounds blessed with an abundance of birdlife in tranquil surroundings. Close to our family home and hearts since the mid 1980’s .
"San Telmo Bay" - November 2012 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - The majority of the tourists from Britain head for the south of Tenerife for guaranteed sunshine and golden beaches but I prefer the North which has a much more Canarian feel to it with it’s natural volcanic beaches which inspired me to paint this vibrant scene in Puerta de la Cruz.
"Portrait of Terry Payne" - November 2012 - Acrylic on canvas, 20 x 16” - I seldom create portraits but felt it was important to include one of my dear father and was not displeased with the likeness. It is also rare for me to choose acrylic as a medium for the finished work.
"Norfolk Church in Winter" - October 2012 - Oil on canvas board, 12 x 16” - Commision, sold 2012 - I found myself painting snow for the first time. Painted from photographs from a client who requested that I left it in it’s sketchy form after first the viewing. I believe the church is somewhere near Diss in Norfolk. I particularly enjoyed creating the snow covered Yew trees in the churchyard.
"Cambodian Fishing Village" - September 2012 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - It is quite a common sight in Cambodia for people to live in floating homes like the ones portrayed here. This was inspired by photographs by myself and other travellers
"Sydney Harbour Bridge" - April 2010 - Oil on canvas board, 30 x 24cm - This was the very first landscape painting I created having only started painting in February 2010 at the age of 45. Anything before this work was purely experimental as was everything I did for the following year. The title speaks for itself of course. I still remember that tranquil pensive moment in 1992 waiting for the perfect shot with my 35mm film camera when the small sailing boat passed by the backdrop of the silouetted bridge just as the sun was setting. I reflected on the places visited, people I’d met and experiences I’d had before leaving Australia after three months for the United States.

"The Pursuit of Equilibrium" - December 2021 - Oil on canvas, triptych 40 x 110cm - Essentially a geometrical labyrinth design. 3 interlinked 30 x 30cm canvases mounted on board. The opposing spiral pathways can be followed in either direction. Whatever route we choose to follow we should always meet in the middle.
"Silver Birch" - November 2017 - Oil on deep canvas, 40 x 40cm - Abstract composition. Inspired by an embroidery design in wool created by Maureen Coe, my Aunt and Godmother.
"Feathers and Foliage" - February 2017 - Oil on canvas, 12 x 16” - Abstract composition. Based on Tropical birds enjoying the symbiosis of what is left of our precious rainforests.
"Renewal" - September 2016 - Oil on canvas, 24 x 18” - Abstract composition. Inspired by a sunset beach walk in Dominican Republic.
"Dreamtime 92" - July 2016 - Oil on canvas, triptych, 24 x 54 1/2” - Inspired by my love of aboriginal art since spending several months touring Australia back in 1992. It is made up of three individual 20 x16” canvases fixed to a board painted with impasto of neutral colour whilst maintaining a simple earthy palette for the three individual designs. The design on the right was created several years before. I then decided to create the other two to bring them all together as a triptych.
"The Bonds Between Us" - January 2016 - Oil on canvas, 18 x 24” - Achieved Semi-Final at Master of Art International 2016, The Forum, Norwich. - I sometimes like to create works of a more abstract nature. This composition is simply about the love and protection of a close family unit in an uncertain world.
"Adaptation" - November 2015 - Oil on canvas (varnished), 20 x 16" - An eclectic mix of creatures of Australia with hunters. This is another version of one of the 3 designs of my triptych “Dreamtime 92”. I felt this version worked better on it’s own.
"Quartet" - May 2015 - Oil on canvas, 24 x 18” - Abstract composition Using simple blocks of colour .
"Artist at Easel" - September 2014 - Oil on canvas, 24 x 18” - Abstract composition Using simple blocks of colour.
"Midnight Tango" - September 2014 - Oil on canvas board, 16 x 20” - Tango dancers. Inspired by an evening at The Theatre Royal.
"Lion In Blue" - July 2013 - Oil on canvas, 16 x 20” - Commision, sold 2013 - This is probably not something I would have chosen to paint but I was asked by a friend to create simplified alternative version of a painting spotted in a magazine. I did however have such fun creating it. She has a Leo birthsign of course.
